All About The History Of The Motorcycle
Motorcycles were initially introduced in the second half of the 19th century. The idea to develop them was the work of numerous engineers and inventors in Europe. In the 1860′s A blacksmith in Paris introduced the first company to construct bicycles with pedals (velocipede). The first steam powered velocipede is traced back to 1867. Designs were introduced to the US in 1863. In 1868 a twin cylinder steam velocipede was introduced in the US.
Petroleum powered bikes, which ran on light gasoline, were introduced in Germany around 1885; previous engines were run on town gas. The first commercialized products developed in the 1880s. In 1894 Hildebrand & Wolfmuller was the first motorcycle available to the public to be purchased. The first known US bike was introduced in 1895. It weighed 200 pounds and got 40 MPG; however, later that year a US inventor introduced a bike which was capable of getting 58 MPG, and was the first termed “motor cycle.”
During the WWII era, there were over 80 different motorcycles available in Britain (1930s), and twice as many motorcycle models on the market than in the early 21st century. Production demands increased in Europe due to the war, which included motorcycles for military use. After the war, many American veterans began forming “bike” clubs to replace the camaraderie which was experienced during the years of the war.
Today, the market is dominated by Japanese manufacturers such as: Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Kawasaki; but, Harley Davidson still maintains a great degree of popularity, especially among American riders. The popularity of motorcycles today has driven luxury brands like BMW and Ducati to enter the market as well.
